Ongoing wars, political conflicts, earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters are causing a record-high number of people to flee their homes worldwide. According to the leading international aid agencies, the new year will without a doubt usher in rising humanitarian needs.
The Mail & Guardian recently published that the United Nations expects that at least 87 million people around the world need humanitarian assistance and is therefore seeking a $20.1 billion to meet the demands. “Besides displacement caused by long-term conflicts in places like Syria and South Sudan, there is also the threat of more violence in Central African Republic and hunger caused by El Nino, which is expected to bring more drought to already-parched southern regions in Africa and potential flooding in the east.”
A total of nearly 60 million people were displaced in 2014; an increase of 8.3 million in only one year. Displaced figures had already reached record-high levels in 2013, exceeding 50 million for the first time since World War II.
