Photojournalism winner announced at AidEx 2015 Humanitarian & Development Journalism Award
The winners of the inaugural Humanitarian & Development Journalism Award were recently announced at AidEx, the leading international event for professionals in aid and development. NRS International partnered with AidEx to launch this award in order to recognise and celebrate the hard work that journalists do to portray the realities of an often misunderstood sector.
The Award had two categories; one for reporting and one for photojournalism. In total, more than 100 entries of the highest quality were submitted. Following a public vote and evaluation by a panel of industry experts, the two winners were eventually determined.
Victor Lacken from Lensman Media Services was crowned the winner of the photojournalism category for his exceptional coverage of the Ebola crisis. For three months in 2014, during the height of the epidemic, he documented the work of the Red Cross burial teams in Liberia. With unrivalled access to one of the most challenging aid efforts, the judges deemed that his photographs made a truly outstanding contribution to the field of humanitarian journalism.
Lacken combined excellent photography with compelling storytelling techniques. From many different angles, and depicting the cultural nuances, his photographs showed how the virus affected all layers of the society. The fact that Lacken spent three months in Liberia during this dangerous Ebola outbreak underscores his extreme devotion and commitment.
