Reporting winner announced at AidEx 2015 Humanitarian & Development Journalism Award
The winners of the inaugural Humanitarian and Journalism Award were recently announced at AidEx, the leading international event for professionals in aid and development. NRS International partnered with AidEx to launch this award in order to recognise and celebrate the hard work that journalists do to portray the realities of an often misunderstood sector.
The award had two categories; one for reporting and one for photojournalism. In total, more than 100 entries of the highest quality were submitted. Following a public vote and evaluation by a panel of industry experts, the two winners were eventually determined.
Holly Young from The Guardian newspaper was announced as the winner of the reporting category for her thought-provoking insight into a little-considered aspect of the current refugee crisis in Europe. A key objective of the Humanitarian and Development Journalism Award was to recognize journalists that bring stories to light that would otherwise have remained hidden. Holly’s award winning article uncovered the previously unexplored issue of the mental health problems facing refugees entering Europe, and the support that there were receiving.
The European refugee crisis has been covered extensively, but this angle had been overlooked by most media outlets. As Holly commented:
“I sought out and wrote this piece because it had been something that hadn’t been covered at all by the international media. I was interested in how far the provision for refugees extended above and beyond basic sustenance and shelter, and what the arguments for this looked like. Overall the objective was to shed light on the full complexity of the migration journey and experience.”
We are proud to share with you this award winning article.
