Road to sustainability: Introducing sustainable production management system
As a supplier to the humanitarian community, people are central to our operations – from beneficiaries using our family tents and mosquito nets, to our colleagues who create, produce and market them. Check out this featured story from our colleague Muhammad Hassan, Senior Production Manager – Core Relief Items, at our Pakistan-based manufacturing arm, H. Sheikh Noor-ud-Din & Sons (HSNDS), as he takes us through the early stages of our company up to becoming the industry leader that it is today:
“The manufacturing knowhow of H. Sheikh Noor ud-Din & Sons (HSNDS) can be traced back 40 years ago, when we started with the production of canvas shelters. Responding to the growing worldwide demand for tents, we opened our first manufacturing facility in 1973 which produced tents and canvas. A key moment in the company’s history when we began to supply tents to the United Nations during the Iran-Iraq war in 1980.
“As the demand for global humanitarian aid grew, we remained on top of the industry. Over the years we have added new products to our portfolio such as tarpaulins, blankets, sleeping mats and water containers. The most recent addition to our catalogue is the Rex Hall, king of our shelter range, bringing high quality mobile storage units to the relief market.
“Together with my production team, we continue to implement the system more effectively by utilizing advanced operational techniques and technology in our production lines.”

“In recent years, we managed to differentiate ourselves by introducing a sustainable production management system (PMS), as well as product development program. Together with my production team, we continue to implement the system more effectively by utilizing advanced operational techniques and technology in our production lines. This has resulted in a significant increase in our productivity; an important outcome of which our clients directly benefit.

“In addition, we collaborate with clients in bringing innovative products that meet the end users’ needs. Last year, we served as the manufacturing partner of Oxfam’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) team in developing the Jerry Bucket. The improved design of this life-saving 14L bucket functions as a stackable safe water container. With this innovation, we can now help improve the lives of beneficiaries by combating the alarming incidence of drinking water contamination.”
